World Usability Day 2016

November 10, 2016

This year for World Usability Day, the theme is Green UX or Sustainable UX. From World Usability Day's website, "The theme for 2016 is “Sustainable User Experience (UX)” or “Green UX.” Sustainability and UX design are innately intertwined since they are both about creating the best experience for people. Green processes and sustainable products take into account goals such as recycle, reuse and incremental improvement. It’s about taking existing products and services and developing ways to refine and redesign them to be more effective, efficient and reusable in ways that enhance a person’s life."

This year we will be having speakers from the DC community, who are in businesses that are working for a greener, more sustainable world.

Speakers

Julia D'Amico, Project Management and Customer Experience, Aquicore

Julia D'Amico is a key member of the Customer Experience Team at one of DC's fastest growing Internet of Things companies, Aquicore. Aquicore is a SaaS company redefining the way commercial real estate uses data to to optimize their energy, water and gas usage. Her role at Aquicore is managing customer accounts to ensure they receive ongoing value and deep insights from the product, as well as designing and analyzing the customer lifecycle from sale to ongoing engagement. The hundreds of meetings, phone calls, workshops, and conversations with Aquicore's customer base have provided her with a unique insight into the customer's desired outcomes and pain points, a driving force behind her collaboration with Aquicore's Product Team. In her former life, she worked in Business Development for a winery, and Digital Strategy for a leading Eco-Tourism company. She moonlights as an interior design junkie, marathoner, and film nerd.

Tom McDougall, Founder, 4P Foods

Tom was born and raised in the mid-Hudson Valley of NewYorkState.  He grew to love the rolling country, and learned to question the suburban sprawl that took over one cow pasture after another around his childhood home.

After moving to DC and reading one too many Michael Pollan books, he found himself on a life-changing path of working towards food systems change.  He is the founder of 4P Foods, a benefit corporation that works with over 100 local farms, delivering their sustainably produced food to customers in and around DC.  The goal is to use food as a tool to create a more equitable, socially just and sustainable food system of tomorrow.

Tom is a fierce advocate for True Cost Accounting as a resource to change the conversation around what, ultimately, is the true purpose of business.

His favorite vegetable?  Kohlrabi.

B. Cordelia Yu, Content and Editorial Strategist

B Cordelia Yu is an editorial and content strategist working on projects to expand democracy and access to communities of knowledge. Particularly around policy, environmental activism, journalism, and scholarship. They are also a core coordinator for the crowdsourced project Letters for Black Lives.

We're potentially looking for 1 more speaker for a ~15-20 minute talk.  Interested in presenting? Email president@uxpadc.org to claim your spot!
